A Small Lesson in God’s Timing

This happened many years ago, long before I met Zephyr.

On one of my weekday off days, I was somewhere around the City Hall area. I honestly cannot remember what I was doing there.

As I walked past St Andrew's Cathedral, I suddenly felt like going in to have a look. As a Catholic, I was curious to see how similar—or different—the Anglican cathedral was compared to our churches.

So I stepped inside.

I sat quietly in one of the pews, somewhere in the middle of the cathedral, simply taking in the beauty of the place. I was not there for a service. I was not looking for anything in particular. I was just admiring the building and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

After a short while, two ladies walked down the aisle and approached me.

"Excuse me, what time is Mass?" one of them asked.

I was momentarily puzzled.

"Mass? The Catholic Mass?"

"Yes," they replied.

It turned out they were in the wrong cathedral.

I directed them to Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, which was where they intended to go.

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

At first, I thought nothing of it.

But sometime later, the thought struck me: what were the chances?

On a random weekday, at a time when I had no reason to be there, I suddenly felt like entering an Anglican cathedral. I sat down for a while, and shortly afterwards, two people arrived who needed directions to a Catholic Mass.

Had I walked past without going in, they might have wandered around looking for help. Had I left a few minutes earlier, I would have missed them entirely.

It was one of those small moments that reminded me of God's providence.

The desire to enter the cathedral seemed completely ordinary at the time. Yet perhaps God had a purpose for it all along.

Nothing dramatic happened. No miracles. No voices from heaven.

Just a simple reminder that God often works through ordinary moments, ordinary decisions, and ordinary people.

Sometimes we do not realise it, but we may be exactly where God wants us to be, at exactly the right time, for someone else's benefit.

That day, God gave me a glimpse of His timing—and allowed me, however briefly, to be His instrument.
